Cha Cha Cha Mambo Afro-Cubano Afro-Cuban Rumba

Mambo

Mambo (original meaning was ‘Santero Priest’) was born at about the same time as Cha Cha Cha, created by Orestes Lopez and developed by Damaso Perez Prado, based in Mexico. Like the Cha Cha Cha the Mambo was based on the Danzon but using other rhythmic combinations. Mambo was faster and sexier than the Cha Cha Cha, and became the rage in 1950s New York and across the world. Prado played Mambo in many films of the period, and the dancing was considered so voluptuous that many countries banned them! Of course, with prohibition the popularity of the Mambo became assured. The Mambo has recently been revived with Lou Bega's ‘Mambo No 5’ which recently took the world by storm.
