Life
in Cuba
Homero González
was born in Havana, Cuba and trained at the Escuela De Arte de la
Provincia de Havana. He began his professional dancing
career with the Carnival Group Charanga De Bejucal and subsequently the
most famous carnival in Cuba, the Guaracheros De Regia, directed by
Umberto Medina.
In 1987 Homero
joined Teatro America for a Cuban television programme, directed by
Gilberto Bosa and Guanarie Almuedo, provided a weekly presentation of
various aspects of Cuban dance ie. Afro Cuban Rumba, Cuban popular dance,
ballet and contemporary. Homero specialises in the Rumba and Afro
Cuban presentations.
In the 1980's he
developed into cabaret work, dancing with some of the best companies in
Cuba, including Antonio Maria Romeo, Los Kelellas and Empressa Turarte,
working in the Playa Giron. He also directed a Cabaret at the
invitation of the Canadian Tourist Board 'Los T con E'.
In
1990 he became choreographer to the Bennet More Cabaret, working with
Feliz Mauricio and Gilberto Bosa. From 1989 to 1993 he danced with
the internationally acclaimed Cabaret Tropicana. In 1993 he became Director of
Cabaret
Groups working at the Playas Del Este, including 'Cabaret Marazul', 'Cabaret Las Terrazas', 'Cabaret Megano' and at the Hotel
Itabo Cabaret
Tropicana. Also in 1993 he
was invited to accompany Silvia Pena, Tropicana singer soloist, in a
promotional tour to Santiago De Chile, sponsored by the Cubana Aviacion.
Whilst pursuing his cabaret work Homero retained his involvement in Afro
Cuban and traditional dance and worked with many
leading Rumba groups, including
Papo Angarica, Grupo De Ardo, amongst
others.
International
Career
In
October 1999 Homero was invited to the US to give dance demonstrations in
Los Angeles and San Francisco with Enio Cordoba's 'Let's Dance' company
and has since returned on many occasions.
In
November he was a guest teacher at the 1999 International Salsa Dance
Congress in Rotterdam, Holland and in December gave master classes at the
popular Brean Sands Pontins Salsa Festival which attracts almost 2000
dancers, where his Cabaret Show also performed. An official video
has been released of the weekend, featuring the dance show and including
Homero's classes.
In
2000 Homero was invited to perform with the Afro Cuban Company Musik and
Dansteater in Sweden and has continued his series of workshops in various
different dance forms in Rome and Paris.
From
2001 to 2007 Homero has continued his series of workshops and performances
in various different countries including Hong Kong, Cyprus, Slovenia, Rome
and Paris to name just a few.
Life
in
London
Homero is now
based in London and currently teaches Afro Cuban, Rumba, Cuban Popular and
Salsa
Classes various venues in and
around London and the South East. He also organises
dance workshops
all over the UK and in Europe. Classes, workshops and
shows have been held in Spain, Italy and Norway in addition to the UK,
including the Royal Festival Hall and the Barbican.
Homero dances in a feature film out on video with a Salsa theme entitled
'Born Romantic' on which he worked as Choreographer and dancer, partnering
the principal actress, Jane
Horrocks from 'Little Voice'. Many of his dance group also feature as
dancers in the film. The film is out on general release.
Homero is
also the Artistic Director and choreographer of Salsa
Cubana Cabaret a Latin dance cabaret show. They
are a Cuban style cabaret group, combining dances using all the Cuban
Rhythms of Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, Son, Rumba, Salsa, Bolero and Rumba
with modern interpretations of African beats.Homero's most recent
television projects have been to film four short dance programmes for the
BBC, teaching Salsa, Cha Cha Cha, Merengue and Mambo.
